Cultivar Name
Alyogyne huegelii 'West Coast Gem'
Origin
A selection from a seed germination event
Characteristics
Compact shrub, 2.0–3.5 m (h) x 2.0–4 m (w); flowers 80–100 mm across x about same long, deep bluish-purple, can be produced most of year but especially Spring to Autumn; leaves 70–120 mm long x about same, palmate with slender petiole, broadly 5-lobed green.
Cultivation
Highly ornamental medium to tall moderately branched shrub. Suited to a range of acidic and alkaline sandy to clay loam soils that drain moderately well. Best in a sunny site but will tolerate some shade. Soft sappy growth can suffer frost damage, but if grown 'hard' frost damage can be negligible. Responds well to pruning and will usually produce growth from leafless wood. Best to form 'bushy framework' from an early stage by shortening stems. People are often loath to prune this cultivar because it is always producing flowerbuds or is in flower but that is a 'false strategy' as the stems may become long and leggy on young plants. Responds well to low applications of a controlled release low phosphorus fertiliser but often grows well without supplementary nutrients.
