Origin

Grevillea ' Bon Accord' is a hybrid between G. johnsonii and G. wilsonii. The hybrid arose at Austraflora Nursery in Montrose, Victoria, in 1982 and was then selected as worthy of further propagation. The name Grevillea 'Bon Accord' was adopted as one of the parents, G. wilsonii, is from Western Australia and the other, G. johnsonii, is from Eastern Australia, thus east meets west. The decision to register the cultivar was made at the time of the proposed summit meeting between the USA and the USSR of 1985, hence the name 'Bon Accord'. The cultivar was first received by the Authority in November 1985. Registration applied for by Austraflora Nurseries Pty Ltd, PO Box 146, Montrose 3765.

Characteristics

Note: Formerly Grevillea 'Austraflora Bon Accord' This cultivar is an upright shrub to 2m wide and is of medium density. The shrub has a rigid appearance but the leaves are not sharply pointed. The leaves are pinnatisect and up to 10cm long by about 7-8cm wide. The new growth is a bronzy colour. The flowers are crimson from 30 to 35mm long and held in upright bunches. The buds develop in July and August and the flowering occurs from about October to February. Diagnosis: Grevillea 'Bon Accord' is an intermediate between the two parents in the following ways: the cultivar is about 2m tall, G. wilsonii 1.5m tall and G. johnsonii 2-4m tall; leaves pinnatisect as in G. johnsonii , longer than G. wilsonii but shorter than G. johnsonii, and less sharply pointed than in G. wilsonii but more so than G. johnsonii. The leaves are divided into smaller and more numerous segments than G. johnsonii. These general morphological characteristics can be readily seen in plants of Grevillea 'Bon Accord'.

Cultivation

Highly ornamental small shrub. Suitable for well drained soils. Best in a sunny site but will tolerate some shade. Frost resistant to -6C. Responds well to pruning.
