Chamelaucium uncinatum 'Mignonette'

Origin

A wild selection of C. uncinatum made in October 1989 from Bibby Creek, Yerramullah Road, near Cervantes, Western Australia. The original collection was made by Mr Kim Norrie, an employee of King's Park and Botanic Garden. First received by the ACRA on 6th November 1990. Applicants are K W Dixon and I R Dixon; Kings Park and Botanic Garden; West Perth, WA 6005.

Characteristics

A bushy shrub 70 cm wide and 1 to 1.2 m high. Leaves medium green, 0.05 to 0.1cm wide, 0.18 cm long and hooked at the end. Flowers are bright pink ageing to offwhite and 0.9 to 1.2 cm across. Semi-double flowers with highly dissected petals often irregularly shaped. The bunching of the petals as they age resembles flowers of mignonette. Diagnosis: Habit and form are similar to the surrounding wild forms which resemble Chamelaucium 'Mullering Brook', however, 'Mignonette' is shorter in stature which may be due to the young age of the specimen plant. Main distinguishing features are the semi-double flowers often irregularly shaped with dissected petals and the mignonette-like appearance of the bunching petals.

Cultivation

Frost hardiness is similar to C. 'Purple Pride'. It has also survived 40.0C temperatures with no ill effects. It responds well to regular pruning and has potential as a cut flower and ornamental plant. It must be propagated by vegetative means to reproduce the exact form.
