Cultivar Name
Grevillea 'Superb'
Origin
Grevillea 'Superb' is a hybrid between G. bipinnatifida and a white form of G. banksii. This cross was manipulated and was produced in cultivation by Mr M Hodge of Moorooka, Queensland. Pollen was removed from G. banksii and the seed set on G. bipinnatifida.
Characteristics
This cultivar is a shrub of medium density, growing to plus/minus 1m tall by 1-2m wide. The foliage is very similar to G. 'Robyn Gordon' (a cross with the same parent species) and it is virtually impossible to distinguish between them. The inflorescence can measure plus/minus 15cm long by plus/minus 9cm wide. The individual flowers are moderately densely packed on the raceme and completely encircle the rachis. Individual flowers measure 4.5 to 5cm long. The pedicel and perianth are also covered in dense, closely appressed hairs. The style appears glabrous but does have scattered, very short, silky hairs. The inflorescences are borne teminally. The buds are dark in colour before opening. The inflorescences are very similar to G. 'Robyn Gordon' except in colouration. The flowers are salmon in colour with the perianth changing to red as they age. The styles are red with yellow tips. Diagnosis: Vegetatively this cultivar is very similar to G. 'Robyn Gordon'. The difference is in the flower colour as described above.
Cultivation
Performs best in an open to semi-shaded situation in well-drained soils. Severe frosts (-3C and below) burns the softer new growth, but mild frosts are tolerated. It responds well to pruning, helping to keep a more compact shape.
