Cultivar Name

Origin
Verticordia 'Venus Pink' is a hybrid between Verticordia blepharophylla and possibly Verticordia bifimbriata. It originated in the garden of NJ and P Moyle of Mandurah as a self-sown seedling. The name 'Venus' is a signatory of Moyles Nursery, while 'Pink ' signifies the flower colour. The cultivar was first received by the Authority on 17 December 1990. Registration was applied for by P and N Moyle, Lot 224 Mulga Drive, Mandurah WA 6210.
Characteristics
An upright open shrub to 45 cm high by 30 cm wide after 4 years growth. The leaves are light green elliptic, opposite, minutely denticulate at the margin, 3mm long by 2mm wide, openly arranged, more sparse on new growth (longer internodes), with small prominent oil glands. The flowers are pink to 14mm wide held in open terminal spike-like groups to 10cm long. Continuous flowering on new growth provides a gap of 2cm to 4cm between spike-like groups. Flowering period in WA is from October to April with intermittent flowering at other times. Diagnosis: Verticordia 'Venus Pink' differs from V. blepharophylla in it's smaller, more open leaves. It has larger flowers, differing flower colour, less dense spike-like flower groups and more continuous flowering period. It has more upright growth and smaller stature while it differs from V. bifimbriata in its more open habit, larger and more openly arranged leaves. The flowering spike-like groups are larger. Flowering period is longer and the flower colour is a lighter pink.
Cultivation
This cultivar is moderately drought tolerant, moderately frost tolerant, and a good container plant. Propagation must be by vegetative means to preserve the cultivar.
