- Origin
- Callistemon 'Sallyann' is a pink flowered form of Callistemon paludosus that was originally purchased from a Mr D Sandell of Victoria. After flowering the form was selected by Mr G Wilson as worthy of further propagation. The cultivar was first received by the Authority in March 1983. Registration applied for by Mr G Wilson, PO Box 74, Belconnen 2616.
- Characteristics
- The shrub grows from 3-4m tall by 2-3m across and has pendulous branchlets bearing soft, lolly pink brushes of flowers. The flowering season is from November to May. Diagnosis: Callistemon 'Sallyann' differs from the usual cream flowered form of the species by its clear pink flowers. There are other pink flowered forms of Calistemon paludosus in cultivation but many of these have "dirty" pink colouration compared to the clear pink of C. 'Sallyann'.
- Cultivation
- This form has been in cultivation for many years, with the applicant remembering this form or an extremely similar form being grown by Schubert's Nursery in Victoria in the 1950's. The Schubert form was said to have been selected by Bill Cane of Maffra, Victoria. Callistemon 'Sallyann' is as adaptable to cultivation as the more common cream flowered form of the species, tolerating heavy soils, waterlogging, exposure to wind, drought, and is frost hardy. It has been widely used in landscaping works in Melbourne. This cultivar must be propagated by vegetative means to preserve the cultivar form.
