Origin

Correa 'Raelene Goldie' is a garden seedling selection of Correa reflexa var. reflexa. The originator was Mrs Marion Beek of Naracoorte, South Australia, in the late 1980's. It is named in honour of a special friend of the originator.

Characteristics

Spreading shrub to c. 1.2 m x 3 m with a dense growth habit. Branchlets richly tomentose with pinkish and rust-coloured stellate hairs becoming brown and glabrous with age. Simple cordate leaves, 27 mm x 16 mm, shortly petiolate. Leaf apices acute, leaf bases cordate, venation reticulate, margins entire with rust-coloured stellate hairs. Upper surfaces of mature leaves dark green and scabridulous. Upper surfaces of young leaves light green and tomentose with minute white stellate hairs and occasional rust-coloured stellate hairs, becoming more concentrated at margins. Lower surfaces minutely densely tomentose with white stellate hairs and scattered rust-coloured stellate hairs becoming more concentrated on the veins and margins. Calyx hemispherical with fine rusty tomentum. Corolla cylindrical, 33 mm x 9 mm, bright red with fine tomentum of red stellate hairs gradually becoming white-coloured at yellow-green tips. Anthers shortly exerted, narrow oblong and obtuse. Peak flowering is from July to October in most districts. Diagnosis: This cultivar conforms to descriptions for C. reflexa var. reflexa by Wilson (1998) but is distinctive by its prolific flowering, which makes it a desirable form for cultivation. The flower colour and size differs from other C. reflexa cultivars such as C. 'Dawn Glow', C. 'Granny's Grave', C. 'Icicle' and C. 'Lemon and Lime'. The flowers are similar to C. 'Mary's Choice' and C. 'Narrow Neil' but plant sizes and habits are different and leaf sizes and shapes differ. (All of the mentioned cultivars originated in wild populations whereas C. 'Raelene Goldie' is a garden seedling).

Cultivation

This cultivar is drought hardy, but only moderately frost hardy. It has a dense growth habit with spreading branches. The large bright red flowers which appear in winter are prolific and are attractively displayed. It is easy to grow from cuttings and is bird attractive. This form would be suited to most garden conditions, including dry shade but flowers more prolifically in a sunny position. It responds favourably to light pruning. It would suit embankments and rockeries as well as foreground planting in garden beds. It has been trialed successfully for many years.
