Cultivar Name
Blechnum minus 'Hellyer Fountain'
Origin
Blechnum 'Hellyer Fountain' is a form of the B. minus which was selected from the wild near Hellyer Gorge in West Tasmania. The selection was made by Mr Michael Garrett of Berriedale, Tasmania. Cultivar first received by the Authority in June 1983. The applicants are Mr M Fountain and Mr M Garrett, Berriedale, Tasmania.
Characteristics
Blechnum 'Hellyer Fountain' is a bipinnatifid form of the species. It grows to a height and width of about 1m. The outstanding feature of this cultivar are the bipinnativid fronds. They are irregularly lobed, each of the pinnae being more deeply lobed in the lower 2/3 of the frond then becoming more or less crenate towards the tip. The lobes are rounded with minutely and irregular lobes extend up to 2.5cm further than the others. The "fertile" fronds have much the same characteristics but are "skeletonized" and do not produce spores. Diagnosis: Blechmum'Hellyer Fountain' differs from the usual form of B. minus in its bipinnatifid form. B. minus usually has divided pinnae with minutely serrate margins and the fertile fronds become curled and thickly laden with spores. Other comments: This cultivar does not produce spores but may be propagated from stolons. Tissue culture may also be used. It is frost hardy but will not tolerate drought. Blechnum 'Hellyer Fountain' has been in cultivation since 1981.
Cultivation
Grows in moist, well drained soils, but adapts to heavy clays. Likes dappled shade or partial sun.
