Origin

Grevillea 'Shirley Howie' is said to be a hybrid between G. sericea and G. capitellata. It is a shrub to a height of about 1.3m with an equal spread and originated at Howie's Nursery at Coopers Plains Queensland. Cultivar received by the Authority 9 September 1977.

Characteristics

The pointed leaves are entire and up to 45cm long by about 4mm wide. The upper surface is green with a distinct mid-vein whilst the underside is covered in short hairs. The mid-vein is also prominent on the underside. The leaf edges are rolled under. The flowers are born in dense clusters at the ends of laterals - some short and others long and the styles 10mm long. Diagnosis: This cultivar is different from its stated parents in that it grows higher than is usual for G. capitellata and the leaves are larger than is usual for G. capitellata and the leaves are larger than is usual for G. sericea.

Cultivation

Suitable for well drained soils. Best in a sunny site but will tolerate some shade. Frost resistant to -6C. Responds well to pruning.
