Origin

Grevillea 'Poorinda Ensign' is said to be a hybrid between G. lavandulacea and G. ilicifolia. The original cross was done by Mr L Hodge of Victoria. The origin of the name is obscure. The cultivar was first received by the Authority in November 1975 (an undated specimen was received prior to 1972). Registration applied for by Mr L Hodge of Victoria.

Characteristics

This cultivar grows to .8cm tall. The leaves are glabrous on the upper surface and covered with silky hairs beneath. The leaves can be up to 28mm long though mostly are around 15-20mm long by 1-4mm wide. The leaf shape is variable, and occasional lobed leaves are found. All lobes and leaf tips end in a pungent point. The leaf edges are rolled under. The flowers are a bright pink and found in dense clusters on short terminal branchlets. Each flower is around 8mm long. The styles are up to 25mm long and are a much darker pink. Diagnosis: G. lavandulacea and G. ilicifolia vary considerably over their natural occurrence. The cultivar is very different to its purported parents. Grevillea 'Poorinda Ensign' very occasionally has lobed leaves and this is probably the only characteristic that can be directly attributed to G. ilicifolia.

Cultivation

Grevillea 'Poorinda Ensign' requires a well drained situation in full sun to semi-shade. Pruning after flowering helps to keep the cultivar dense. Vegetative propagation must be used to preserve the cultivar form. The cultivar is frost tolerant and moderatly drought hardy.
