Origin

Grevillea 'Misty Pink' is said to be a hybrid between G. banksii (the compact red flowering form) and G. sessilis.Cultivar received by the Authority 21 July 1975. It was bred by Lloyd Nielsen of Tambourine Mountain and named by Russell Costin of Lakkari Native Plant Nursery, Copalara, Queensland.

Characteristics

This cultivar grows to plus/minus 2.5m tall by 1.5m wide. It reaches these dimensions at 3.5 years of age. The habit of the cultivar closely resembles that of one of its parents, G. banksii. The leaves of this cultivar are plus/minus 18cm long by 17-18 cm wide at their widest point. They resemble the leaves of both parents fairly closely. The individual lobes of the leaf have the more pungent tips of G. sessilis. The stems are slightly angular being intermediate between the angular stems of G. sessilis and the round stems of G. banksii. The flowers are borne in a raceme 10-11cm long by plus/minus 6cm wide. They are a soft pink with orange styles and are found all year round. The individual flowers are plus/minus 35mm long to the tip of the stigma and packed densely into the raceme. The inflorescence is wider than those of G. sessilis and approximately the same as G. banksii. Individual flowers are the same size as for G. banksii but differ in colour.

Cultivation

Performs best in an open to semi-shaded situation in well-drained soils. Severe frosts (-3C and below) burns the softer new growth, but mild frosts are tolerated. It responds well to pruning, helping to keep a more compact shape.
