Brachyscome multifida 'Breakoday'
Origin
Brachyscome 'Breakoday' is a seedling variation of the Brachyscome multifida that arose in cultivation at Lilydale, Victoria in 1979. The cultivar was first received by the Authority in June 1984. Registration was applied for by Mrs M E McAllister of Lilydale, Victoria.
Characteristics
This cultivar grows to ca.200m tall by up to 800m wide. The heads are a deep mauve in colour and up to 20mm across. Diagnosis: B. 'Breakoday' has a more compact habit and heads with deeper coloured ray flowers than the more usual form of the species. It is also immediately distinct because of its darker and broader leaf lobes.
Cultivation
The cultivar arose in cultivation in 1979 and has been produced commercially since that time by Park Native Nurseries of Park Orchards in Victoria. It is an excellent plant for use as a ground cover, especially in rockeries but also has an application for use in pots or hanging baskets. Full sun and adequate moisture are required for maximum flowering potential. Some flowers are produced all year but the main seasons are spring and summer. The plant can withstand moderately dry conditions. It has been damaged by severe frosts in Canberra, but quickly recovers with the advent of warm weather. Propagation must be by vegetative means to ensure retention of the cultivar's features. It grows well as far north as Cairns.
