Cultivar Name
Correa reflexa var. reflexa 'Icicle'
Origin
Correa 'Icicle' is a selection from a wild population of Correa reflexa var. reflexa from coastal heathland at Bald Hill, Portland, Victoria. The name refers to the area where it was found and the colour of the flowers. It was selected in 1992 by Cherree Densley, who submitted it for registration on behalf of the ASGAP Correa Study Group. Specimen first received by the Authority 17th June 1999. (Submitted as: Correa 'Portland Frost and Lime')
Characteristics
Low-growing shrub to ca. 40 cm x 30 cm with a dense habit. Corolla cylindrical 35 mm x 10 mm, cream with a pale pink flush at the base and a 1cm band of pale green near the tips. Peak flowering is from March to June in most districts. Diagnosis: This cultivar conforms to descriptions for C. reflexa var. reflexa found naturally in the Portland area but is distinctive by its unique flower colour. Two colour forms occur commonly in the Portland area, bright red with green tips or uniformly green. Other natural variants occur and 'Icicle' is a colour selection from wild sources. There are very few cream forms of C. reflexa in the trade, the most common form available being red with green tips.
Cultivation
This cultivar is vigorous in cultivation. It is frost and drought hardy and has a dense growth habit with upright branches. The unusual banded cream flowers, which appear in early autumn, are an attractive feature of the plant. It is easy to grow from cuttings, is bird attractive and relatively pest and disease free. This form would be suited to most garden conditions. It is lime tolerant and responds favourably to light pruning. It has been trialed successfully for over 6 years.
